Government/Economic Policy Committee Meeting
Organized retail crime has increasingly impacted business resulting in significant financial losses and operational challenges for retailers. These coordinated theft schemes undermine profitability and compel businesses to invest more in security measures, creating an atmosphere of concern for both local businesses and consumers. More and more businesses are simply opting to close rather than continue to deal with danger and costs.
Join us on September 17 at 4 p.m. in the Chamber Conference Room for a discussion led by Mary Knox, Assistant District Attorney for Contra Costa County. Ms. Knox will share insights on Proposition 36, which will be on the November ballot. The measure proposes critical changes to the state's approach to drug and theft crimes. This initiative aims to increase penalties for certain drug offenses, add fentanyl to the list of drugs subject to felony charges when possessed with a loaded firearm, and enhance penalties for theft, making theft of property valued at $950 or less a felony for individuals in with two or more prior theft-related convictions. This could result in sentences of up to three years in jail or prison, a notable increase from the current maximum of six months.
The meeting is open to all members of the Chamber of Commerce and interested attendees. We look forward to your participation.Images
